A Rich History is a profound exploration of time, place, and the organic memory of the Colorado landscape. In this singular work, Colorado-based artist Sean Nelson creates a dialogue between human-made geography and the natural growth of the land.
The process is deeply tactile: Nelson sources vintage maps of local regions and utilizes the cross-section of a Quaking Aspen from Salida, CO, as a literal printing block. By applying ink directly to the ancient tree rings and pressing them onto the 21 x 27 inch map surface, he captures a "fingerprint" of the forest over a specific coordinate in time. The result is a hauntingly beautiful overlay where the life cycles of the Aspen intersect with the roads and ridges of the high country. Housed in a rustic wood frame, the piece stands as a testament to the deep-rooted stories hidden within the Western terrain.
