Andrew Barker
Andrew Barker is a mixed-media artist whose work is defined by a sophisticated technical tension between traditional naturalist illustration and bold, geometric modernism. Drawing from a diverse background in Utah, Oregon, and East Africa, Barker utilizes a complex iterative process to layer watercolor, ink, gouache, and colored pencil on paper or wood panels. His mastery of linework and shape treatment is heavily influenced by the rugged topography of the Rocky Mountains, where he seamlessly integrates classical anatomical shading with hard-edged, "street-aesthetic" forms. This unique approach, informed by two decades in the design industry and a BFA from Oregon State University, allows Barker to translate his deep concerns regarding biodiversity and the environment into dynamic, highly structured compositions that celebrate the shared struggles and joys of all living beings.
